Travel Sick? Here Are 5 Suggestions For Long Distance Dating

Most people think long distance dating doesn’t work. And to be fair, you’re more likely to hear about times it’s failed than an amazing success story. But we’re here to tell you it’s ok. It doesn't have to be the end just because your partner is relocating for work, or moving back to their home town for 6 months. You can do this, you just need to be realistic and honest.

As the dating app for dating offline, we at The Inner Circle see it as our duty to help where we can. Our mission is to get people on dates in real life, not just texting indefinitely. But we’d only be doing a half job if we didn’t follow through with some top quality dating after care, so here are our tips on making long distance dating work for you:

1) Communicate regularly (but not constantly)

It should be the foundation of any relationship, but it’s especially important when you can’t see the other person regularly. Talk about your feelings, share what’s going on, just communicate! It’s incredibly important to share, and it stops both of you constantly worrying or feeling out of touch.

But you’ve got to get the balance right.

There’s a difference between communicating, and spamming your significant other. You don’t need to text every 30 minutes about what you just ate or if someone sneezes next to you on the train. Share what’s actually happening, not literally everything that happens.

2) Don’t just talk about your day (online games, watch something simultaneously)

This is where a lot of people struggle. Unless you’re lucky enough to do something completely different every day, there’s going to come a point where you run out of things to talk about.

Keep it fresh by sharing a digital activity together! Yes, that can sound a little lame, but it’s genuinely a great way to make sure the time you spend online together is still quality time. Play a game against each other, or watch something simultaneously. There are some great online tools that let you watch together, give it a google and then give it a try.

3) Keep common interests (something to talk about)

Say you wanted to do an art class together. Both of you can take a friend and do that class separately, and when you catch up you’ve got the perfect new shared experience to talk about. It’s win win.

4) But do different things too

The fight is stopping the conversations from dying. So get out there and do something new for you! This is a great way to take your mind off the distance, and give you something brand new to talk about.

5) Plan what you can

Plan what you can, you may be far away from each other but you should know when you’re free to visit, and make sure you’re planning in regular times to call/skype and not just text.

But in the end, the most important tip is stay honest. Honesty is key to any relationship, add in distance and less time physically together and it’s crucial. The theme of these tips has been communication, and being honest about what you’re feeling is the most important thing you can do.
